Hemophilia & AIDS

During the early to mid 1980's, the blood supply was heavily contaminated with HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. Many people with hemophilia were treated with blood products that were made from large pools of contaminated human blood plasma. As a result, over 90% of people with severe hemophilia contracted HIV.

There are a variety of individual lawsuits that have been filed against the purveyors of contaminated blood products. Many have been lost, and several have been "settled" by the manufacturers on the condition that the people receiving compensation will not talk about the case, or the compensation.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), a U.S. Governmental body, has issued an extensive report on the failure of the government and industry to effectively regulate and protect the blood supply. They have issued a variety of recommendations.
