What's Being Done To Process Benefits Faster
All applications the Social Security office receives from people with HIV/AIDS are processed as quickly as possible. The Social Security office can begin paying you
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits right away for up to six months before a final decision is made on your claim.
If:
- You are not working
- You meet the SSI rules about income and resources
- Your doctor and other medical sources certifies that your HIV infection is severe enough to meet the medical eligibility rules. (You may have your healthcare provider complete a checklist form telling how the HIV infection has affected you, and bring it with you when you apply.
Call Social Security's toll free number, 1-800-772-1213, for copies of the form SSA-4814 for adults and SSA-4815 for children).
