The HIV-1 GenotypR PLUS blood test can identify resistance-associated HIV mutations for all antiretroviral drugs currently approved by the FDA for treatment of HIV infection.
The HIV-PCR assay was developed by Specialty Laboratories Inc., based in Santa Monica, California. The test combines PCR technology and automated DNA sequencing to locate specific HIV gene mutations on the virus. The gene mutations are then matched with known drug-resistant HIV strains to identify similar resistance-associated mutations.
The cost of the HIV-1 GenotypR PLUS test is about $400, according to the company, and is covered by most health insurance providers.
