Draft Report To Be Made Available On Dietary Supplement Labels

Washington, DC, June 23, 1997

The Commission on Dietary Supplement Labels has made its draft report available for public comment and/or corrections over the next 45 days. In the report, the Commission -- established by a 1994 act of Congress and appointed by President Clinton -- provides recommendations for the regulation of label claims and statements for dietary supplements, including the use of literature in connection with their sale, as well as procedures for the evaluation of label claims. In making its recommendations, the Commission also has evaluated how best to provide truthful, scientifically valid, and non-misleading information to consumers in order that they may make informed health care choices for themselves and their families. The comment period for the draft report will run through Aug. 8. The Commission plans to complete work on its final report by Sept. 30. Copies of the draft will be available beginning at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 24, and can be obtained by calling the Commission's Information Response Center at (301) 650-0382 or by facsimile request at (301) 650-0398.
