Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors are a new clsss of anti-HIV drugs which work to stop functionability of the reverse transcriptase enzyme which HIV needs to infect T-cells.
NNRTIs are structurally diverse, but all of them bind near the catalytic site of HIV-1 reverse tyranscriptase. The NNRTI class is very specific to HIV-1. They are not effective against HIV-2.
Like the NNRTs, the approved nucleoside analog drugs (RTIs) also stop reverse transcriptase, however the RTI drugs must go through complex chemical changes within the infected T-cells before they can be effective. Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors work without that chemical processing. This may mean that the NNRTI drugs will prove to be a superior defense against HIV-1.
