3TC is composed of the (-) enantiomer of the racemic mixture 2'-deoxy-3'-thiacytidine (BCH189).

3TC has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used in combination with AZT in HIVpositive patients under the accelerated approval regulations.
