A new study in the journal Nature indicates that a new treatment for AIDS will require more research. Two volunteers received interleukin-2 plus highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in an effort to completely rid the body of HIV. However, the virus rebounded when treatment was stopped, despite the fact that their blood seemed to be clear after culture tests of 330 million cells. According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a study author, the findings suggest that some HIV hides continues to lurk in reservoirs within the body, out of the reach of anti-HIV drugs. The patients started taking HAART again, and their virus levels quickly returned to undetectable levels, Fauci said.
