Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers think they have found HIV's weak spot-- a pocket on the surface of HIV which is vulnerable during the infection process. The spot is described as a cavity on the surface that is hidden until HIV tries to attach to a healthy cell. When the cavity is exposed, a drug can enter it and clog it, inactivating the virus permanently. The key is to find a drug that will block this pocket at the right time for prevention. Doctors are considering small-molecule drugs so that a pill can be made.
